Tentative equipment list: goniometer (Aziel/Shaghayegh), potentiostat (?), lock-in amplifiers (Ashutosh), high-speed camera (Sangjun/Neil), electrometer (Ashutosh), pulse generator (Ashutosh).

  • September 16: Jiandong presented his MEMS Literature Review, a paper from the Journal of MEMS titled 'On-Chip Vacuum Generated by a Micromachined Knudsen Pump' and Sangjun gave a presentation about his work titled '3D Self Assembly'. Present: Ashutosh, Aziel, Huseyin, Jiandong, Marianne, Neil, and Sangjun.
  • September 2: Huseyin gave a presentation on Low Voltage EWOD. Present: Ashutosh, Aziel, Huseyin, Jiandong, Marianne, Neil, Sangjun, and Yuming.
  • August 26: research presentations by Huseyin and Marianne. Huseyin: 'Protein Laser Printer and Electrowetting', Marianne 'Engineering Surface Texture to Direct Droplet Movement'. Present: Ashutosh, Aziel, Huseyin, Jiandong, Marianne, and Sangjun.
  • August 19: Aziel and Marianne: Transducers'05 review. Aziel presented 'Flat fluidics: acoustically driven planar microfluidic devices for biological and chemical applications' and Marianne presented 'A distributed actuation method based on Young-LaPlace Forces' and 'Using EWOD actuation in a micro conveyor system'. Joanna presented a talk called 'Water contact angle hysteresis on rough hydrophobic surfaces' and Jiandong presented 'Vertical and horizontal parallel mounting of microcomponents on a substrate with high surface coverage'.   • August 5: literature review by Joanna and Jiandong. Jiandong discussed: 1. Polymeric parafin micropumps with active values for high pressure applications; 2. Novel fabrication method of self positioning and focal length tuning by applying voltage; 3. Microlens array and microclampers. Joanna discussed: 1. 2D Magnetic Manipulation of microdroplets on a chip; 2.   • July 15: Sangjun talk and Transducers'05 review: Single crystal silicon micromachining technique and its application to inertial sensors. Abstract: In this talk, a short review on the single crystal silicon micromachining technique will be given. In single crystal silicon MEMS, a proper electrical isolation method should be applied. My Ph.D. work is mainly focused on the development of electrical isolation method that provides mechanical stability and good electrical properties, free from residual stress and footing phenomenon in DRIE process. With the developed method, a z-axis micro gyroscope was fabricated, and I will present the experimental results with the device. Several papers published in Transducers 05 would be reviewed as well.
