Microtech Courses

The applied microtechnology program is one of the fastest growing research centers at the at the University of Washington, with active faculty and student participartion from a number of departments in engineering and science. Research and teaching in the program focuses on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microelectronics, and photonics. Our mission is to perform cutting-edge research in these and related areas, and to provide students with thorough knowledge and hands-on experience in the various aspects of microtechnology.

Microtechnology has already revolutionized the way we live, as the basis for the integrated circuits and computer industry. Rapidly advancing research areas at the UW include:


  • Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS): integrated microchips capable of a wide variety of sensing, actuation, computation, and communication functions, from microscopic bio-implants to tiny spacecraft components.
  • Photonics and Micro-Optics: Micro- and nano-photonic devices and systems for optical signal processing, optical communication and networking, novel digital video displays, and biophotonics.
  • Bio-sensors and microscopic implants: tools and techniques to directly access living matter at the cellular or molecular scale.
