Seminar: Future of Wireless LANs: IEEE 802.11n

Speaker: Dr Amer Hassan

Abstract

Wi-Fi is proving to be an essential technology for pervasive computing.  However, there are key issues that need to be resolved to enable some applications enjoyed by end users.  This talk outlines the current status of Wi-Fi industry, issues to be addressed, and how the industry is collaborating to enhance the user experience.  The talk then presents details on the emerging next generation Wi-Fi currently referred to as 802.11n.  This next generation WLAN technology offers UDP throughput over 100 Mbps in a 20 MHz channel.  This is about 4 times increase in current 802.11a or g.  A summary of the proposals for the 802.11n are presented with technical insight into different signal design and error control coding schemes.  Then the talk evaluates how this emerging technology can enable key scenarios in different market segments.

Speaker Biography

Dr Amer Hassan received his BSEE and MSEE from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, in 1983 and 1984, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering Systems from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in December 1988. His research activities are focused on the areas of wireless communications (Wi-Fi, GPRS/UMTS, and UWB) and error control coding.

Since then, Amer worked at Ericsson Mobile R&D in North Carolina as a technical manager for emerging systems, and he was an Adjunct Professor at North Carolina State University where he taught Digital Communications and Error Control Coding.

Amer joined Microsoft as a Wireless Architect in June 2000 as part of Windows Networking and Communications.  Dr Hassan represents Microsoft at the Wi-Fi Alliance Board. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at University of Washington in Seattle
