The High Confidence Software and Systems (HCSS) Coordinating Group (CG) of the Federal Networking and Information Technology R&D (NITRD) Subcommittee, Committee on Technology of the National Science and Technology Council in cooperation with National Science Foundation (NSF), US Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and National Security Agency (NSA), invite you to submit a position paper for the National Workshop for Research on High-Confidence Transporation Cyber-Physical Systems in Automotive, Aviation, and Rail Cyber-Physical Systems (AAR-CPS).

The workshop is aimed at identifying common needs and research challenges that must be addressed for the healthy future of individual sector as well as collective transportation sector for aviation, automobile and railway. Each of these three sectors have the common feature that infrastructures interact with vehicles which when viewed as cyber physical systems, can lead to improvements in safety, resource-efficiency, control and maintenance of such systems. While the CPS view of these systems can greatly benefit the sectors, currently there is no result or methodology that will allow building better systems in any of these sectors. Research in automobile has barely begun while the aviation and railway sectors are yet to develop CPS view of their systems. Hence, this national workshop will help to facilitate the identification of common as well as individual needs and research challenges arising by view these large distributed systems as dynamic cyber-physical systems.

Workshop attendance is by invitation only. The call for position papers is used to solicit inputs for the HCSS CG to help identify research needs, challenges, and roadmap for the AAR-CPS. The workshop will result in a comprehensive report capturing research needs, prioritized recommendations, and a roadmap to determine what, when, and how these priorities should be addressed over an identified time frame. The organizers will deliver this report to the National Science Foundation that summarizes the workshop’s findings. Invitees will have the opportunity to provide additional inputs to the AAR-CPS research roadmap. Position papers are requested by October 2008.

This workshop is designed to support the HCSS CG of the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Sub-committee, National Science and Technology Council, Executive Office of the President.
