Seminar: Ultra Wide Band Update, IEEE 802.15.3a

Speaker:        Joe Decuir, MCCI

Abstract

Ultra Wide Band (UWB) refers to new technologies to deliver wireless data at very high rates (~500Mb/s) over short range (<10m), using very wide bandwidths (500MHz) at very low power (100uW).  IEEE Standards Committee 802.15 is trying to develop a new standard, descended from IEEE 802.15.3-2003.  The MultiBand OFDM Alliance (MBOA) is working in parallel, given the ongoing political deadlock.  Applications include short range Internet access, ‘Wireless USB’, ‘Wireless 1394’ and home entertainment connectivity.

This talk covers the two major competing technologies, Direct Sequence UWB and Multiband UWB, in context of current alternatives.  Applications will be addressed, particularly network access, wireless USB and location awareness.

Biography

Joe Decuir has been working in networking and communications for 25 years, including his first two startups, Everex, Microsoft and MCCI.  He is a voting member of IEEE 805.15; he will have just returned from the Berlin meeting.  He chairs the Ranging technical subcommittee in the MBOA.  He is also a member of the USB Communications Device Class subcommittee.  Other mischief includes a dozen patents and numerous public communications standards.

Joe is the outgoing local chairman of the IEEE Communications Society.  He has just begun serving as the secretary to the IEEE Seattle Section.
